Whilst generally regarded as an ancient tree of Chinese origin, evidence has been found in Victoria, Australia of Ginkoites, direct relatives of the Ginko biloba, posing the question - is this ancient tree an Australia native? Definitely from Gondwana origins, its fan-shaped leaves have been found embedded in Australia’s ancient rocks and black coal (Wonthaggi, Vic), making it one of our oldest native trees.
